Military and Diplomatic Highlights:
· As of February 17th, the Ukrainian military is reporting the following Russian losses:
o 859,920 Wounded or Killed Soldiers
o 10,089 Tanks
o 21,063 Armored vehicles
o 23,222 Artillery systems
o 25,505 Drones
o 370 Aircraft
o 331 Helicopters
o 28 Warships
· The Ukrainian government reported on February 14th that a Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter protecting the world from radiation at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Ukrainian firefighters have been working around the clock in freezing weather to completely extinguish small fires that still smolder.
· International Assistance Update:
o Norway is contributing $107 million to the country’s air defense systems.
o Germany has announced the delivery of around 100 IRIS-T guided missiles.
o The Netherlands is donating 25 YPR vehicles.
· The United Kingdom (UK) reported on February 15th that the Royal Navy and Air Force took over monitoring a Russian Naval task force as it sailed close to UK territorial waters.
War and Atrocity Crimes Investigations Highlights:
· The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine reported that between January 17-24, 845 new war crimes were registered.
Humanitarian Impact and Response and Recovery Highlights:
· Ukraine continues to face an increase in attacks, which severely restrict humanitarian access and operations and hamper the delivery of assistance to communities in need.
· At least 12.7 million people require humanitarian assistance.
· There are at least 6.3 million refugees living in Europe and 3.6 million are internally displaced.
· Recent US funding freezes affected the work of a women-led non-governmental organization in Dnipro on February 12th. This group has set-up three centers to provide services to vulnerable children and women who have experienced violence.
· The Ukrainian Red Cross (URCS) on February 11th installed two new mobile shelters in the Dariivka community. Around 50 shelters now help protect civilians across the region.
· The URCS reported on February 13th that their mobile health units assisted 760 residents in the Sumy region.
· As of February 14, at least 2,500 people remain in the front-line Kindrashivka Community. Evacuation efforts continue among continued Russian attacks. The UN and its partners have delivered 21 tons of essential winter supplies.
· Aid Deliveries Update:
o Through an interagency convoy the World Health Organization on February 4th delivered over-the-counter medications to cover annual needs of at least 700 residents of Myrnohrad.
o On February 7th, the UN and their partners delivered 20 tons of supplies to the residents of Dariivka community. They have been living without water, electricity and other basic services due to continued hostilities.
· Food Security Update:
o At least five million people face food insecurity mostly in frontline areas.
o Through the Grain from Ukraine initiative, the World Food Programme (WFP) has collected 9,200 Metric tons of wheat, with milling operations to commence in February.
o WFP is launching a winterization project under the School Meals Program to support up to 80 schools across the country.
o The WFP on February 7th, distributed 800 food boxes to two villages in the Kharkiv region.
Russian Dis-information Campaign Highlights:
· The RIA has increasingly been using AI-generated images to dehumanize Ukrainians.
Cultural Heritage Protection Highlights:
· On February 1st it was reported by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that Russian had launched a missile strike on the historic center of Odesa. At least two cultural buildings placed under UNESCO Conventions’ protection were damaged. UNESCO has deployed teams as of February 11th to support assessing the damage.
