Military and Diplomatic Highlights:

• The Ukrainian military is reporting the following Russian losses:

o 817,160 Soldiers (Wounded or Killed)

o 9,803 Tanks

o 20,394 Armored vehicles

o 22.040 Artillery

o 22,579 Drones

o 369 Aircraft

o 331 Helicopters

o 3,049 Cruise missiles

o 28 Ships

o 1 Submarine

• The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is reporting the following:

o On January 5th, IAEA staff reported hearing loud blasts near Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), coinciding with reports of a drone attack on the plant's training center.

o The Rivne NPP reported on January 17th, that they had to temporarily reduce its power output amid heightened military activity near all of Ukraine’s nuclear power plant sites in recent days.


War and Atrocity Crimes Investigations Highlights:

• The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine reported that between January 10-17, 832 new war crimes were registered.

• The Health Cluster reports that there were 470 attacks on healthcare in 2024. These attacks killed 73 people and injured 405 people.


Humanitarian Impact and Response and Recovery Highlights:

• As of January 16th, an estimated 12.7 million people (36% of the population) need humanitarian assistance. Civilians across all regions have been affected the heaviest impacts are in the east, north and south.

• There are 3.7 million Internally Displaced Persons.

• The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on January 14th that two more trucks of supplies reached Shevchenkove in the Kharkiv Region. Intense hostilities severely disrupted access to basic services there.

• The Ukraine Red Cross (URCS) on January 17th has distributed liquefied petroleum gas to 800 households in the Sumy region.

• Healthcare and Public Health Update:

o On January 6th, the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to support community-based mental health services and Community Mental Health Centers by training mental health specialists.

o As of January 16th, the EU continues to coordinate medical evacuation missions:

 4,027 missions have been completed.

 33 missions are in progress.

 899 missions have been cancelled

o The URCS reported on January 14th that they provided 30 beds and linens to support hospitals.

o On January 17th, the WHO supported an interagency convoy that delivered medical consumables and surgical equipment to Kherson City Hospital.

• Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC) Update:

o The ETC enhanced the United Nations Department for Safety and Security operational capacity, supporting their critical missions and inter-agency operations in high-risk areas with 12 additional Remote Site on Vehicle kits.

o They have responded to the worsening security situation in Pokrovsk city, caused by the frontline that is coming close, and extracted the Very High Frequency (VHF) equipment from the remote site.

o The cluster received the needed telecommunications equipment and started integrating a Non-governmental Organization channel into the existing VHF infrastructure facilitating NGO access to ETC Security Communications System.

• On January 10th, the URCS installed a new drinking water treatment plant in the Zaporizhzhia region. This facility will provide water for over 1,000 people.


Russian Dis-information Campaign Highlights:

• A recent press conference by the Russian Foreign Minister had various lies and distortions. The summary of these lies and distortions are available here.

Cultural Heritage Protection Highlights:

• On January 7th, the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications reported that at least 2,156 cultural infrastructure sites were damaged or destroyed due to Russian aggression.

• The Odesa's Transfiguration Cathedral is being restored with the support of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (‌UNESCO) and Italy after it was damaged by a Russian missile strike in 2023.
